The Secret's Out

1.30.2011

[dress/belt: from Canada, shoes: Bakers]

Remember my post about the bf's birthday? I couldn't say what the surprise was at that time because I didn't want "the cat out of the bag" and good thing I didn't. Why you may ask? Well I happened to have a surprise birthday party planned for him and it wouldn't have been a surprise if I told you before him right? So I had to patiently wait to tell you guys.

Here are some pics of what I wore for the little shindig. Something casual and cute that can be worn for any occasion. It was a lot of fun celebrating his birthday with his close friends ~> made it that much more special.

Canada 2011: Montreal Day 2

1.29.2011

farmer's market

ham & cheese crepe

salmon crepe ~ super yummy

bananas with nutella

crepe flambee suzette: grand marnier + orange citron

the place were I bought the caramel sauce

can u see my snow angel?

[dress: VS, sweater: volcom, glasses: fendi, boots: bamboo]

The next day we went to Farmer's Market to have some crepes for lunch. Right next door to the crepe place there was some really good home-made caramel sauce. Everyone was trying it so I thought I'd give it a shot. OMG it was really good! Not too sweet, which I like nowadays. So I just had to buy one to bring it back to the states. Interestingly, the caramel was made with alcohol liquor to help preserve it. Maybe that's what made it taste so good?

Before we knew it time flew by and we had to start heading back to NYC to catch our 6AM flight back to Cali. The night before we were watching the news (surprisingly it was the first time we watched TV during our whole trip) and there were weather warnings of a snow storm coming. That kind of freaked us out because they cancelled all the flights that day and we were flying out the next day and we didn't have any place to stay so we really needed to go home as scheduled. During our scary drive back to NYC through the snow storm, we made a quick stop and saw all the snow surrounding us. It was so beautiful that I think we all got a burst of energy and got excited to see all the fluffiness. As my sisters were making snow angels I crazily jumped into the knee-high snow (even though I was wearing cotton) to make my own. Luckily, I was wearing several layers of clothing so I didn't freeze from my impulsive reaction and we safely made it -on time- to the airport.

As for the weather transition: California is definitely hot and sunny right now. Totally different from NYC. I kind of miss dressing up for winter now...I never thought I'd say that. Never say never right?

Canada 2011: Montreal Day 1

1.28.2011

[jacket/scarf: volcom, long sleeve/leggings: f21, ear muffs: NYC street vendor, socks: gap, boots: bamboo]

In the middle of the night we sadly left New York and headed out to Canada. I'll admit it: it was a long car ride. But, on the bright side (literally), we got to see the sunrise and that was a sight to see.

When we finally arrived in Canada, we were all very eager to see the Basilique Notre Dame de Montreal (tongue twister huh?). We were also very hungry so after parking, we went to grab some food at the Underground Mall. Of course I could not resist myself from the temptation of shopping...even just for a little bit. I was really shocked at how much the tax was in Canada: you have to pay two taxes that adds up to about 15%. Crazy huh?!? Wow I guess I shouldn't complain about California's 8.75% tax. Although I sure did love New York's tax-free year (last year); this year it was about 4% so still pretty good. Too much math? Sorry, sometimes I get carried away when analyzing things.

Moving on...after eating, we walked on over to the Basilique Notre Dame de Montreal. It was a beautiful church with an interesting story behind it. I didn't want to post up so many pictures of it because it is something you should see in person and I don't want to spoil it for you. :)

Lastly, to end our day, we strolled on through Old Town Montreal and then drove up some hill to see the pretty city night lights. I don't think I told you yet but Canada was about 10 degrees colder than New York so we were all freezing here. It was in the low teens and felt like how cold it was on our first NYC trip (the coldest it got was 9 degrees!). The weather was insane and brutally cold so thank goodness for heaters in cars. I think I seriously would have died without them.

New York 2011: Top of Rock

1.27.2011

[coat: volcom, scarf: guess, boots: volcom, ear muffs: NYC street vendor]

The past two years we went to the top of the Empire State Building to see the NYC night lights. This year we decided to do something different and try Top of Rock.

During our first NYC trip we literally got to see snow fall from the top of the Empire State Building. Seriously. The experience was surreal and unbelievable: there was no snow above us except clouds and below us we could see snow forming. Insane right? It was like an adrenaline rush because we were so amazed. Silly of us I know, but please note that snow doesn't fall from the sky in California so we love it every time we visit New York (even though it's super cold and we're freezing our butts off haha).

Then the second time at Empire, we caught the view of the city during sunset. The panoramic view is absolutely breathtaking. And the colors? Gorgeous. You just have to see it for yourself. I will post pictures from my past NYC trips when I get the chance so you can kind of see what I got to see.

This year atop the Rock, we were able to make it for sunset as well and this time we got to see the Empire State Building. Looking at it from afar reminded me of our first trip when we got to see snow fall from the sky. I really did get flashbacks up there and from my experience, there is nothing like the Empire State Building. I don't know if it was because it was our first time or that we got VIP treatment or that it's a taller building (I think) but the feeling of being up there is...indescribable. A must-do on my list for anyone visiting NYC.

New York 2011: Times Square

1.26.2011

2011 ball if you can see it

[jacket/long sleeve: volcom, boots: bamboo]

What's the one place EVERYONE HAS TO SEE IN NYC? Times Square of course! While this is my third time here, I still enjoy checking it out.

There were bright lights flashing from the tall buildings and noise coming from everywhere. It was a Sunday night and can you believe the Forever21 store had 4 floors and it was open until 1am?!?! Wow! No wonder they call this the city that never sleeps. I believe it. This is definitely the place to go for late night shopping haha spoil yourself.

New York 2011: Cupcakes + Dash + Katz's

1.23.2011

[cardy: foreign exchange, leather shorts: f21, boots: bamboo]

After dumplings we headed out to SoHo. This part of NYC is notarious for shopping galore. There were many stores but we got there kind of late so we didn't get to shop as much. That was probably a good thing for me since it limited how much I could spend.

While walking down the streets, we stumbled across this cute little hole-in-the-wall: Baked by Melissa. It is so small that there's not even any seating area! They sell these adorable bite size stuffed cupcakes that are oh-so-good. My favorites were tie~dye, cinnamon, and chocolate banana (mini of the month). If you are nearby, find this hidden treasure and treat yourself out. You'll be extra happy you did. And don't worry if you don't live in NYC, they ship nationwide so we can all enjoy these goodies anytime, anywhere. How awesome is that?

What we really wanted to check out in SoHo was the DASH store since it just opened this year. Sadly again, since it was Sunday, they closed even earlier so bummer. We didn't get to see the inside of the store. Guess I'll see how it looks like on TV when their shows comes out. There's always next year if anything.

With all the walking we got exhausted and hungry (great combination huh? haha). So we went to Katz's Delicatessen for some pastrami sandwiches (a popular item). If you are a meat lover then you'll probably devour this quickly. Even the NYC policemen like Katz's, as they were standing behind me to order their sandwiches. Sitting there I could not help but to notice their wall full of pictures taken with countless celebrities inside the deli. What was even more amazing was that they have been open for over a century. Wow! Fun fact: Katz's is where they taped the movie "When Harry Met Sally." I felt like I was sitting in a part of history.

New York 2011: Grand Central + Chinatown

1.22.2011

[cardy: foreign exchange, thermal long sleeve: volcom, shorts/socks: f21, boots: bamboo]

Our hotel was conveniently located just 2 blocks from Grand Central so we took the subway all the way down to Chinatown. Luckily, I'm good with maps and since it was our third time in NYC, I know the subway system pretty well haha

We were craving for some dumplings and heard that Joe's Shanghai restaurant was a pretty popular place so had to see for ourselves. Unbelievably, there was quite a wait to get a table so that helped us build up an appetite. When they finally called our number for a table we were so happy to be able to sit down. I was amazed at how packed this small little restaurant was and noticed that ALL the tables had dumplings so I knew it must be their staple item. They had two kinds of dumplings: pork and pork with crab meat. We couldn't decide on just one so we ordered both. Why not sample each right? The verdict: the one with the crab meat was better. It just had that extra "oomph." It was definitely good and I probably could've eaten two orders by myself haha
