How to Cope with Stress

4.25.2022

{This is a paid sponsored post - the opinions are of my own. Thank you.}

While there's no one-size-fits-all solution to this, there are several ways to cope with stress. Last time I talked about listening to your body to understand when - and what - may be triggering you stress.

I'm so happy to be partnering with Providence Health System again but this time, I'm going to share 3 different coping skills to try that you can pretty much do anywhere any time.

  1. Deep breathing - slow inhale through your nose for 4 seconds, hold breath for 3 seconds, slow exhale through nose for 6 seconds. You can close your eyes or stare at the wall while doing this.
  2. Meditation - try clearing your mind for 30 seconds to start. You do this in silence or while listening to nature sounds. The point is to try to block out outside thoughts when you're trying to focus on clearing and calming your mind.
  3. Distraction - sometimes we need to distract our minds to think of something else to focus on to be able to relax and give time to gather our thoughts in a calmer state.

These aren't any secrets. As a mental health therapist, I share these healthy coping skills to try. The perk is that, not only is it convenient, but you don't need any equipments to do it. I like to think of our mind having a bucket of different coping skills to use and when we need it, it's nice to have a variety to try. What may not work this time (for whatever situation it is) May work next time (for a different situation).

Who doesn't like options right?

The more you try different coping skills, the more you find what works for you and when. Again, I can't emphasize it enough to continuously listen to your body when it's trying to tell you something. The more we become self-aware of ourselves, the better we can understand why we think the way we do.
