TRAVEL / PHOTO DIARY :: Puerto Rico Birthday/Graduation Vacation [Part 1]

6.24.2014

Every year I like to travel to some place new for my birthday and this year I ended up in Puerto Rico with the little sisteroos and Jude...

[DAY 1] We landed in Puerto Rico around noon and we were starving so we went straight to brunch at La Playita (aka "the little beach"). Had their ceviche, salmon, and the popular mofongo dish. This coconut drink was bigger than my head - I kid you not - and it was very, very good and very, very dangerous given that there was probably 4-5 different types of Barcardi rum in there. Eeks!

Then we went on a tour of the Bacardi Rum Factory. Fun fact: when they bought this factory there were bats inside which is why their logo is a bat (which is a sign of good luck to them). Another fun fact? They still have bats in there so watch your heads!

Ended our 1st night with some happy hour sangrias and dinner at a local restaurant, Inaru. Usually I'm not a big fan of potatoes (unless they're fries or mashed) but these were delicious. They also sang happy birthday to me in Spanish which was pretty cool. Not too shabby for our first night in Puerto Rico, not too shabby at all.

[DAY 2] The next morning we hiked in a cave (and, yes, there were also bats in here too) to discover a breathtaking view at the end. This place is called Cueva Ventana which means "window cave" and no wonder. It gives you a window glimpse of Arecibo valley and leaves you wanting more.

Just be careful when you get towards the cliff area at Cueva Ventana and whatever you do, don't look down!

Afterwards, we stopped by the Ola Lola's Garden Bar on the side of the road on the way to Shacks Beach for a quick drink. Great service here, by the way! ;)

Made it to Shacks Beach to soak up some sun and play in the water. This was such a great spot for snorkeling (pics to come) and almost felt like a private beach area (aka perfect spot for photos). Had so much fun hanging out here before we headed back home to a homemade dinner back at the house we rented. What did we have? Why yummy spaghetti, of course!
